Catholic tradition holds that this is the tilma (apron) worn by the Mexica Indian Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on December 12, 1531 when the the Lady appeared for the fourth time to him on Tepeyac Hill which today is located in the center of Mexico City. The brown skin virgin, speaking to Juan Diego in his native Nahuatl language told him to build a church upon this site in her honor and she would forever be the patroness of the Mexican people and of all the people of the Americas. Her image was imprinted on that day upon Juan Diego's tilma which 491 years later still hangs above the main altar of a modern church now known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe - https://virgendeguadalupe.org.mx/en/. The Basilica is the most visited Catholic shrine in the world.
We took the picture shown above of Juan Diego's tilma hanging in the Basillica on June 9, 1999 when we visited this special and holy site while teaching a class for Ottawa University in Mexico City.
